Elderly driver crashes car into river

ALTHOUGH disoriented, a woman walked away with a few cuts and bruises after driving into the river on Taunton Road, Pietermaritzburg, yesterday afternoon.

It was not clear how 88-year-old Wembley resident Jean Farr ended up in the river, but her son-in-law, Gordon Smith, said she was fine after the accident, which drew a crowd of onlookers as officials tried to remove her old Mini Cooper.

“She’s just got a couple of minor cuts and abrasions, but otherwise she’s fine. She’s been taken to Mediclinic. She was conscious, but disorientated. These things can happen to older people,” Smith said.

Cam Schoeman, who lives close to where Farr drove off the road, said he did not see the accident happen.

“We heard a loud bang, like we always do on this road. We looked on the right and saw some cars slowing down. When we went outside, we saw the car in the river,” said the Dusi Canoe Marathon competitor.

“The first person who responded did a very good job because he got there and told her to stay calm, and he made her lie down as she was trying to climb out of the car.”

Schoeman said Farr had been in shock and was disoriented.

“The ambulance arrived quickly to take her to the hospital. The police were also on the scene quickly.”

He said it was not the first time someone had driven into the river, and that another driver had managed to get himself into a tight spot in the middle of the night last year.

“Cars always speed down here, and we’d like to have speed humps on this road,” he said.
