Elderly farmer shot dead

2007-12-21 00:00

AN elderly Estcourt farmer was shot dead by an unknown intruder on his Rensbergspruit Farm yesterday evening.

Circumstances surrounding David Green’s (70) murder were not immediately available last night, but his grief-stricken son, also named David, said his father was murdered around 6.30 pm. “He was shot once, point-blank in the forehead. Police recovered one expended 9 mm cartridge on the scene. My mom was in the garden and she rushed to help him, but it was too late.

“A young man dressed in a brown army uniform was seen, but he escaped. Mom pushed the panic button,” said David, who commended the police’s swift reaction.

Koos Marais of the KZN Agricultural Union (Kwanalu) security desk expressed shock and anger.

“Kwanalu expresses condolences to the Green family. With crime being discussed at the ANC conference, it’s time for the government to address these senseless killings.”

He urged police and the justice system to bring the perpetrator to book.

Police spokeswoman Captain Ursula Cronje was not available for comment.
