Elderly rape victim (82) gets treatment

2012-11-19 00:00

AN 82-year-old woman, whose rapist was sentenced to life imprisonment on Friday, spent the weekend in hospital undergoing treatment from doctors and counsellors, after collapsing during the sentencing proceedings.

The woman’s niece said her aunt, from Swayimane in the Wartburg area, was treated for high blood pressure. “She is doing much better than she was on Friday. However, she is still not mentally stable and keeps asking herself what she had done to deserve her attack. She was satisfied with the sentence,” she said.

The woman’s rapist, Avelo Tuswa (25 ), was sentenced by Pietermaritzburg high court acting Judge Igna Stretch, who said the woman he raped was old enough to be his great, great-grandmother.

The rape occurred in July this year.
