Election: ANC campaigners ‘stoned by IFP’

2009-10-12 00:00

ANC campaigners were stoned by members of the IFP on Thursday during an intense campaign aimed at garnering voter support for Wednesday’s by-elections, said the ANC’s Lower south coast regional secretary Mzwandile Mkhwanazi.

According to Mkhwanazi, people were attacked while campaigning for Umzumbe Municipality’s ward 15. Cars were also damaged by stones during the incident and they have subsequently opened cases at the police station regarding the matter.

“Unfortunately no one has been arrested,” said Mkhwanazi when contacted by The Witness yesterday.

Despite Thursday’s incident, the rest of the campaigning went well in the region and their rally was well attended yesterday, said Mkhwanazi.

No disruptions or violent incidents were reported by regional secretaries after campaigning for Ukhahlamba region/Imbabazane Municipality’s ward three, Abaqulusi region/Vryheid Municipality’s ward seven and 12, Harry Gwala region and the Emalahleni region/Newcastle Municipality’s ward seven.

The by-elections are scheduled to be contested this Wednesday in their respective areas.
