Elections: Matat DA voices concerns

2009-04-30 00:00

Four days after the release of the final elections results the Democratic Alliance has alleged irregularities.

Sakhi Martins, DA ward councillor in Matatiele, said the party was shocked to learn that the audited figures released by the IEC were different to the figures the presiding officer gave party agents the day after elections. Martins alleges that after the votes had been counted the party agents were told that provincially the DA had 451 votes and Cope 302, and nationally DA got 491 and Cope 315. But when the results were released by the IEC it showed the DA and Cope as having zero national votes in the area.

"If this is happening here, then how can we be sure that it could not have happened elsewhere?" said Martins.

KZN chief electoral officer Mawethu Mosery said that after the results were counted they were audited by PriceWaterhouseCoopers and signed by the party agents. "It was unlikely that miscalculations could have been missed by all of those people," he said.

Mosery said that the IEC takes all allegations very seriously and will investigate any valid complaints.
