Elegant palm pod people

2010-04-08 00:00

CROUSE Art Gallery in Durban is hosting the new Gustav Klimt range made by local artist Audrey Rudnick.

The pod people stand about 70centimetres high and are made out of natural materials with the main body being made out of palm pods.

Rudnick, who was born in Durban and educated in Zambia, always knew she wanted to be an artist. After school, she travelled through Europe for six years, painting and sketching. She also spent some time in Sri Lanka designing and making batiks, but it was while she was spending time in Paris that she was inspired to sculpt and then to combine the media of painting and sculpture.

Her unique pod people, which have a strong following across the world, include a violinist, flautist, dancer, trumpet player, birdtree, shhh-tree, mask and several ethnic women. They are created from resin and wood that flows into a palm pod to round off a very elegant-looking sculpture.

“I mainly paint and sculpture women because I think they are beautiful and, frankly, I find them pleasing to work with. The women have lovely curves and seem to combine both softness and strength, qualities I love to portray in my work,” Rudnick says. — Arts Editor
