Eleventh-hour sale saves golf course

GOLFERS at the Sakabula Golf Course in Howick are breathing a sigh of relief at the news that it will continue operating as a golf course, after rumours that it was to be sold and converted into an equestrian park.

A spokesperson for landowner Peter Nisbet recently announced that the estate has sustained massive losses for several years and that it has become impossible to operate under such conditions.

He said they had put the land up for sale, and the golf course was to be closed at the end of September as it seemed likely that the land was to be sold and converted into an equestrian park.

An 11th-hour offer from a private investor in Gauteng has halted these plans and, in doing so, saved the golf course.

Dave Prentice, who spoke on behalf of the landowner yesterday, said the new owners have decided they wanted to continue running the golf course.

“It is going to be business as usual for the golfers, who are relieved and happy about the new development,” he said.

“The sale offer was finalised on September 3, a day before the Sakabula Homeowners’ Association was to debate the sale to an equestrian company,” said Prentice.
