Empangeni: Life terms for rapist uncle

2013-05-20 00:00

A 27-YEAR-OLD man has been sentenced to two life terms by the Empangeni Regional Court after he was convicted of raping his two nieces in the Mgazi area, outside Empangeni in 2011.

The girls, who were aged three and nine at the time, had been sent by their aunt to borrow a cellphone charger from their uncle.

When they arrived at his hut, the uncle reportedly grabbed the three-year-old girl and raped her, before turning his attention to the older victim.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, then sent the girls back home with the charger.

After the nine-year-old victim told her aunt what had happened, two rape cases were opened with Empangeni police, and the uncle was arrested and charged in November that year.

KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni welcomed the conviction.
