Employee runs off with R250 000

2014-03-28 00:00

A LADYSMITH man who was trusted to bank R250 000 for his employer, went as far as to stand in the queue at the bank, before he decided to disappear with the money.

Police said that on Tuesday an unnamed Ladysmith businessperson dropped the employee (39) off at a local bank to do the business banking.

However, a few minutes of waiting in the bank queue convinced the employee he needed the money more, and he decided to walk out of the bank without depositing any money.

When he did not return from the bank, the businessperson suspected something was amiss and made enquiries, only to discover the employee never deposited the money.

Captain Thulani Zwane said the police arrested the employee yesterday morning after they received information that he was hiding out at his girlfriend’s house in Bergville.

“Police found the suspect and managed to recover half of the stolen cash. The money had been divided and hidden away in various places. Police are still searching for the remainder of the stolen cash”, Zwane said.
