End-of-season emotions a factor

2008-11-14 00:00

THE schools’ cricket season is almost over and for some the weather cancellations have been disappointing. The heavy rain over the last few days will leave some matches in jeopardy today — the penultimate Saturday of the schools’ cricket year.

The match that will create the most interest sees Michaelhouse host long-standing rivals Hilton on the Roy Gathorne Oval. Their match during the first term was cancelled due to rain and as today is the last for both teams, emotions could affect the final result.

On results over the year, Michaelhouse should be favourites, but the Balgowan side have lost more matches to the weather this term than most and, with just two matches played this season, are short of match practice. Hilton have played more often and one result shows the visitors could cause a surprise. Against St Charles, Michaelhouse lost by over 100 runs while Hilton won by seven wickets.

St Charles travel to Kearsney — the last match for the hosts, who will want to finish on a positive note. Both teams had a poor Michaelmas Week, but since then Kearsney have played only two matches, winning both. St Charles have played three games, winning two and losing to Hilton.

Glenwood, also playing their last match, host Westville. The visitors will feel confident as they had a very comfortable win against Glenwood during the first term.

However, the KZN Coastal Under-19 side for the Khaya Majola Week in December has three Glenwood players selected, but none from Westville. All three players, Cody Chetty, Ashraf Moosa and Shahil Ramdin, were chosen for their batting, so if Glenwood can post a sizeable total, they could reverse the first-term result.

A midlands clash between home side Howick and Wartburg is always tightly contested.

Howick are unbeaten this year and beat Wartburg away during the first term, so they will be fairly confident. Howick have one more match to play next week to go through the year unbeaten. It is Wartburg’s last match, which will make them more determined. This will be a keen tussle for the local spectators to watch.

Carter travel to Kloof to play Thomas More at Kloof Country Club in the last game for both sides.

Fixtures (home side first):

Michaelhouse vs Hilton, Kearsney vs St Charles, Glenwood vs Westville, Howick vs Wartburg; Thomas More vs Carter (at Kloof CC), Northwood vs Hillcrest; Creston vs Ixopo, Wembley vs MCS.
