Environment: Workshop for rural women

2010-05-24 00:00

WOMEN from KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape provinces will gather at the Elangeni Hotel in Durban tomorrow to participate in a Women in the Environment workshop.

The workshop, which is a prelude to the Women and Environment conference to be hosted later this year in Johannesburg, is organised by the Agriculture Department and the Department of Environmental Affairs.

The last conference in 2008 attracted over 600 people from all over the country.

A provincial spokesperson for the Agriculture Department, Ncumisa Mafunda, said the workshop is an opportunity for many women interested in uplifting South African women and enhancing their role in environmental sustainability.

She said the aim of the workshop is to bring the women into the forefront of the sustainable development processes and for them to share experiences, best practices and knowledge of solutions for environmental sustainability.

“The assumption here is that you ‘educate a woman, you educate the whole nation’. So this is not for professional women; it is for regular women in rural areas who engage in various activities to provide for their families.”

Mafunda said the workshop will be a chance to educate the women about the relationship of their work to the environment.
