Epworth dominates KZN girls’ interschools squash tournament

2012-05-15 00:00

TWENTY-EIGHT teams participated in the KZN interschools squash tournament held at Epworth over the weekend.

It was very encouraging to welcome Howick High School, who entered two very enthusiastic teams for the first time.

The boys’ A section had four evenly matched sides in Michaelhouse, Westville, Maritzburg College and Glenwood, and the level of squash played by these four sides was high.

The final between Michaelhouse and Westville, played at the Epworth complex, proved to be a very tense battle and a match worthy of a final. Westville won at number five, but then the Michaelhouse “middle order” dug deep, and with three hard-fought victories at numbers four, three and two — clinching the KZN title for the boys from Balgowan. Maritzburg College beat Glenwood 3-2 to take third place.

The victorious Michaelhouse team of Chris Brits (captain), Kenyon Smith, Luke Stevens, Matt Lovett and Nic van der Bos, will now represent the province at the SA Top Schools tournament in August, for the third consecutive year.

The boys’ B section had a disappointing entry, as a number of schools were away in Gauteng on sporting tours. Westville B defeated Kearsney B, Howick B and Glenwood B to win the section.

The girls’ A section was dominated by the strong Epworth A team, who went through the tournament without dropping a match.

Three of their players will represent SA Schools on the tour to Malaysia in May — Nadia Ramchandra, Kayleigh Black (both U19) and Tayla Victor (U16). Tyler Potgieter and Jordan Peek completed their team. The Epworth second team did well to beat the strong St John’s team 3-2, in a very close encounter.

The B section was won by the Epworth third team, who played well to beat the Danville A team, who had SA Schools player Meghan Howard as their number-one star. The St Anne’s third team won the girls’ C section.

FINAL RESULTS:

Boys’ A section:

1 Michaelhouse, 2 Westville BHS, 3 Maritzburg College, 4 Glenwood,

5 Kearsney/Thomas More (match incomplete), 6 Howick High

Girls’ A section:

1 Epworth A, 2 Epworth B, 3 St Johns, 4 St Annes, 5 GHS
