Escapee lands on police

2007-12-13 00:00

A robbery suspect yesterday thought he could escape arrest by jumping out of a seventh-floor window in Musgrave, but landed straight in the hands of police.

The alleged robber dived out of the window of the Travelex Worldwide Money foreign exchange shortly after he and two accomplices apparently stabbed and assaulted three of the outlet’s employees. He broke a leg and was taken to hospital.

Two accomplices were arrested and a look-out man ran away.

According to police, the gang gained entry when the security gate was opened for an employee.

“One of the suspects stood outside while the other three held up three staff members with knives and guns. While they were demanding that the safes be opened, the three staff … were stabbed,” said police spokesman Superintendent Vincent Mdunge.

Police arrived on scene and cordoned off the exits. “The suspect outside the door fled while the other two were arrested. Another suspect thought he could escape by jumping out of a window, but landed on a second-floor apartment. The cash, which was a large sum, was recovered,” Mdunge said.
