Eshowe: girl raped on way to school

2012-07-18 00:00

A GRADE 11 pupil from Nomyaca High School was raped yesterday on her way to school at Nomyaca area, Ndlangubo near Eshowe.

The girl is said to have been walking with another pupil at about 6.50 am when she was attacked.

Education MEC Senzo Mchunu said he was shocked by the incident.

According to the department, the victim, whose identity cannot be revealed, was walking with a friend to school when they were accosted by a knife-wielding man who pulled the Grade 11 pupil into bushes.

The other pupil managed to escape. The man then allegedly raped the girl.

“It is such a shame that we continue to deal with such incidents of sexual assault committed by adults against children, especially girl children. It is really sad that while we preach to our learners the need to preserve themselves and take pride in their bodies and lives, adults continue to do the exact opposite.

“It is despicable and utterly unacceptable. We certainly hope that the police will not rest until the criminal has been apprehended and put behind bars where he belongs. He must be thrown in jail and rot there,” Mchunu said.

The department said the girl managed to walk to the school and reported the incident to the principal. She was then taken to Eshowe hospital for a medical examination.

The provincial police spokesperson, Thulani Zwane, confirmed the incident and said that Eshowe police are investigating a case of rape.

No arrest has been made at this stage, the police told The Witness.
