Estcourt ANC co-ordinator and taxi boss shot dead in his car

2013-10-04 00:00

THE Estcourt ANC election co-ordinator, a local taxi boss, has been gunned down at his home in Wembezi.

Mmeli Mvelase (33) was shot while seated in his car at his home in the Emapulazini area at about 7 pm on Wednesday.

His younger brother, Scelo, said Mvelase had been receiving death threats since June.

“He had been living in fear since June and had been shot at more than three times between June and now. He had received death threats [in the form of] SMSes and calls, but now they have killed him,” said Scelo.

“This is a blow to my family as he loved and supported us all. It’s a big loss even to the community at large as he was an active community member that was taking care of his family and the community, especially when it came to services.”

Scelo said his brother came home yesterday and fed his dogs and went outside. “Our mother, who was bathing at the time, heard a gunshot and rushed out but she couldn’t see anything. Later she found him dead in his car with gunshots to his body.”

He said they believe that Mvelase’s killing is politically motivated because of the tension in the area between political parties. He was also a taxi owner. He had seven children.

Ukhahlamba regional ANC chairperson Bongani Dlamini said they want to see the police acting swiftly to stop these kind of killings.

“This was one of our active members in the organisation and we would like to see the law take its course. He was the election co-ordinator for the ANC,” said Dlamini.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said they are investigating a case of murder.

“No arrests have been made.”
