Estcourt man gets nine life terms for raping girls

2009-11-04 00:00

A 24-year-old man was sentenced to nine life terms in prison for raping two girls in Estcourt.

Phumlani “Mankamfini” Hadebe was also sentenced to 10 and 15 years in prison for arson and robbery respectively.

According to investigating officer Inspector B.E. Buthelezi, Hadebe cornered the 14- and 16-year-old girls in their home and raped them.

After the rape, their home was ransacked and some clothing was stolen. The house was then set alight.

The crimes were committed in 2006 in Estcourt’s Ngonyameni administrative area.

Inspector Buthelezi said the victims testified that the accused had three friends who took part in the crimes.

Hadebe denied any involvement in all the charges, but the girls positively identified him.

“The DNA test results also came back positive so the long arm of the law had to take its course,” said Buthelezi.

He also revealed that after Hadebe’s arrest three men went looking for the girls at their home.

By then they had been taken away for their own protection.

Their mother was found and shot. She survived the shooting, but lost her job due to the injuries she sustained.

One man has been arrested in connection with this crime.
