TOMORROW

• 6 am-9.30 am. The Farmers’ Market every Saturday, selling fruit, veg, flowers, eggs and more. Inquiries: Mike at 082 886 0687.

• 7.30 am-12.30 pm. The Karkloof Farmers’ Market, a fresh produce market, is located 2,6 kilometres from Howick on the Karkloof Road. Access is gained off the D507. The Karkloof Farmers’ Market runs every Saturday morning. Goods on sale include fresh produce from local farmers as well as breads, biscotti, cheese, plants, flowers, ready-made meals, pickles, preserves, nougat, brownies, nuts and lots more delicious goods. There are pony rides and a jungle gym for the children so it is a wonderful morning out for the whole family. Inquiries to Andrea at 082 820 8986.

• 8 am-11.30 am. Breakfast at Lion’s River Farmers’ Market. Proceeds go to the Midlands Crisis and Trauma Centre in Howick. Inquiries to Rex at 082 771 6653.

• 9.30 am. A bowls clinic at Allan Wilson Bowling Club is held for new bowlers. Bowls are provided and flat shoes must be worn. All are welcome. Coaching can be arranged at other times with Peter — phone 033 346 2553.

• 9 am-noon. Every week the model trains in HO Gauge run. Come and watch or run your own at the old goods shed, Hilton Station. Phone to ensure the staff are at the station. Inquiries: 033 344 1742 or 082 470 4898.

• 9 am-2 pm. Craft market opposite the city hall.

• 2 pm. Maritzburg Croquet Club invites people of all ages for a game of croquet. The lawns are in Alexandra Park opposite the cricket Oval. Mallets can be borrowed from the club, flat-soled shoes are recommended. Inquiries: Tim at 033 502 0101 or Viv at 033 396 3661.

• 2 pm-5 pm. Weekly back massage courses. Inquiries: Jenny at 033 386 3323.

• 2 pm. The Ramblers’ Club of Pietermaritzburg invites people interested in hiking to join them in walking the hills of Pietermaritzburg and its environs. Interested people should be reasonably fit. Inquiries: Francois at 033 344 2754.

SUNDAY

• 8.30 am. The Umgeni Steam Railway Preservation Group will be running “Santa specials”, with Father Christmas in attendance. Trains depart from Kloof at 8.30 am and 12.30 pm and travel through the Valley of a Thousand Hills, to Inchanga, where the Inchanga community country fair will be taking place at the station. Tickets cost R100 per person, with senior citizens and children at R60. There is plenty of safe parking available at Kloof station. • 9 am. Alex arts and crafts upmarket in Alexandra Park. New stall holders welcome. Inquiries: 033 396 2807.

MONDAY

• 5.30 pm. Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, sung by the augmented Cathedral Chamber Choir at St George’s Garrison Church. All welcome. Extra parking across the road at Fort Napier Hospital.

TUESDAY

• 1 pm-2 pm. Yoga classes with Jenny. Inquiries: 033 386 3323.

• 7 pm-9 pm. Social badminton in a small friendly group at a central location with free guarded parking. Both beginners and more experienced players welcome. The costs are minimal but the benefits are enormous. Inquiries: Glynn Davies at 033 386 5557.

WEDNESDAY

THURSDAY

• 7 am-10.30 am. Market at Alexandra Road (opposite police station). Fresh veg, fruit, honey and crafts.

• 10 am. The Hayfields Haymakers meet every Thursday in the Lutheran Church in Bester Road, Hayfields. Weekly sessions start with a cup of tea or coffee at 10 am, followed by a talk, demonstration, bingo or music. Lunch is served at noon, costs R20 and needs to be booked by 11 am on Wednesdays at 033 344 2322. If you would like to know more about the group contact Shirley Smith at 033 386 2126.

• 10 am. Free guided tours of Fort Nottingham Museum from Thursdays to Sundays, with 39 brands of old English crockery and other antiques for sale. Inquiries: 033 266 6246.

• December 31, 7 pm. New Year’s Eve party on the Suncoast Sundeck, featuring 2007’s top five Idols finalists, Prime Circle and a host of others, as well as a fireworks display. R100 per person in the general area and R120 per person in the Golden Circle (standing). Tickets are available at Computicket.

• January 16, 6 pm. Howick Birding Group evening meeting — speaker to be announced.

• January 30, 7.30 am. Howick Birding Group morning outing to Midmar Game Reserve. Meet at Thurlow Gate off Bulwar Road. Take tea. Leader: Gordon Maclean. Shirley Bennett and Margie Sleigh will arrange for entrance permit and will collect entrance fee at the gate — R15. Rhino Card holders get in free.
