‘Everything happened exactly the way we were told it would go down’

POLICE had received an anonymous tip that the heavily armed gang would be targeting the Academy Brushware factory.

Officers from the provincial crime intelligence unit, special task force unit and Pinetown tactical response team staked out the factory and were waiting for the gang.

When the gang parked their vehicle near the factory, the officers waited for the opportune moment to pounce.

Before the gang could strike, the police approached them, and all hell broke loose. A senior police officer, who requested anonymity, said they had been told that the gang was waiting for an employee to open the doors to the factory. “We had been told that the gang had planned to shoot the employee and go for the money. We understand that they were working on inside information and their intentions were to shoot the man,” said the officer. “Everything happened exactly the way we were told it would go down.

“We were given information on everything, from the make and colour of the vehicle, the number of occupants and the exact spot where they would park. When police approached the vehicle, they started the car and that’s when the first shots were fired.”
