Ex-PMB to run with Olympic Torch

2010-01-02 00:00

A FORMER Alexandra High School pupil who now lives in Canada has been selected as a runner in the Olympic Torch relay.

Alan Rae, who was born in Pietermaritzburg and attended Boys’ Model School before completing his schooling at Alexandra High in 1968, will be one of the 12 000 torchbearers who will carry the Olympic Flame in the Vancouver 2010 Torch Relay.

“I emigrated to Rhodesia where I lived for five years. I settled in Vancouver after marrying my wife Debbie in Montreal in 1977 and have four grown children …” said Rae.

Speaking after being selected as a runner in the longest Olympic Torch run in the history of the Games, at 49 000 km, Rae said it is a big honour.

“I actually gave my first chance to run to my largest client’s mentally challenged daughter and upon learning of this gesture, I was given a second chance with explicit instructions not to give this one away.

“From the heat of Africa to the frigid climate of Vancouver in February, I cannot imagine what this run of 300 metres will be like …” he said.

The Winter Olympics and the Paralympic Games take place on February 12-28 in Vancouver.
