Ex-council director faces 48 charges

A FORMER municipal finance director in the uThukela District Municipality faces 47 charges of corruption and one of money laundering.

Jan Christopher van den Berg and his wife Kathleen appeared before the Ladysmith Regional Court on Thursday and both were granted bail of R1 000.

They are due to appear in court again on October 5.

Van den Berg is accused of misusing funds, which allegedly landed the municipality with an overdraft of R25 million.

In a statement yesterday, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations (DPCI), known as the Hawks, said the municipality had a R300 000 overdraft before Van den Berg’s tenure, but while he was there it accumulated a R25 million overdraft.

In the statement, DPCI spokesman Musa Zondi said Van den Berg and his wife are also accused of pocketing close to R500 000 from interest derived from investments made on behalf of the district municipality.

“This money was paid to the Van den Bergs by a company used as investment brokers for the municipal funds after the company had received a substantial amount in commissions,” said Zondi.
