Ex-lover warned victim

2012-01-07 00:00

THE woman allegedly viciously assaulted by fugitive Johan Kotze was repeatedly warned about him by one of his former lovers.

Kotze is still on the run after he allegedly shot dead his stepson and hired three men to rape the woman in Modimolle (Nylstroom), Limpopo, on Tuesday.

The woman is still in hospital recovering from her severe injuries. Pieces were cut from her breasts during the gruesome attack.

Sarita Venter, who committed suicide in Bloemfontein in November 2010, won two civil claims against Kotze after he failed to repay almost R500 000 he borrowed from her.

Two of Venter’s sons, Hentie and Hennie de Vos, yesterday showed sister paper Beeld her diary, in which she kept detailed notes during 2010 as she battled Kotze, a former lover, over the money.

The place name Nylstroom, the raped woman’s name and her cellphone number were noted on May 10, June 11 and July 19.

One of the brothers said he was sitting next to Venter on one occasion when she phoned the other woman and warned her about Kotze. “She wanted to help her and warned her: watch out for Johan Kotze.

“She told her he was the biggest pig on Earth.”

Their mother was once a dynamic labour consultant and award-winning marketer, but her sons said: “After Johan Kotze she wasn’t really a person any more.

“He ruined her emotionally and financially,” they said.

Venter suffered from a genetic lung condition, and her sons told how Kotze blackmailed her by forcing her to go for a ride on his new quad bike, and then threatened to send pictures of her doing this to her insurance company, to show them that she was really in good health.

Her sons said that when she would not give him any more money, Kotze did contact the insurers, which stopped making monthly payments for medical expenses.

It also emerged yesterday that Kotze preyed on a string of other Free State women.

Lawyer Jan Maree of the Bloemfontein firm Schoeman Maree Inc. said he is representing four women who lost R1,5 million.

All of them were divorced or widowed, he said.

Kotze had been married four previous times and is in the middle of divorcing his fifth wife, whom he married on October 23, 2010.
