Exciting club cricket this weekend

2009-01-22 00:00

THERE is a double-header in store for KZN Inland Premier League club cricketers this weekend.

Today sees the resumption of the popular KFC Inland Twenty20 competition at the Varsity Oval, with Standard meeting Ladysmith’s K&L at 4 pm followed by Orientals versus Zingari at 7 pm.

Sunday sees Premier 60 take centre stage, and an intriguing match is at the new Standard Cricket Ground (SCG) at Wanderers Club in Aberfeldy Road, where the hosts take on neighbours Zingari just a few hundred metres away from the visitors’ Collegians Club stronghold.

Standard opening batsman Brendon Jones has been scoring heavily this season and he will be looking for another century after last weekend’s 111 against Young Natalians. The Standard opening pair, Jones and Clint Bowyer, have laid the platform for the club’s success with the bat, and Zingari, who saw their match against Orientals rained out last Sunday, won’t find it easy.

Standard’s young captain Kyle Nipper has been in outstanding form with bat and ball and he will be leading a side intent on back-to-back victories over Zingari after their first-round win at Collegians Club.

Reigning KZN Inland champions Varsity and challengers Standard need no further incentive than the carrot of playing in the SA Club Champs later this year. The Inland Premier 60 winners will be off to the Rooirivier-rift Cricket Ground in George on April 4 to face the South Western Districts club champions for the right to play in the SA Club Champs finals.

FIXTURES

Today– KFC Inland Twenty20 (at Varsity Oval): Standard vs K&L (4 pm); Zingari vs Orientals (7 pm).

Sunday – KZN Inland Premier 60: Young Natalians vs Varsity (City Oval); Standard vs Zingari (Wanderers Club); Lancashire vs Orientals (Woodlands); K&L vs Midlands (Ladysmith).
