Exciting line-up for legendary PMB marathon

IT’S all systems go for the 19th annual Maritzburg Marathon in two weeks, which promises to be “more than just a race” for all participants.

At a press briefing yesterday, master of ceremonies Irmgard Franzsen officially announced the much-anticipated race, which offers a host of events for the entire family.

Scheduled for the last weekend in February, the iconic 42 km dash will host top athletes from around South Africa as well as 67 foreign nationals from countries like Afghanistan, Canada, Greece and the U.S.

Beginning on Friday, February 20, the marathon will have an explosive start with a special flame lighting ceremony and a concert with top local performers like King James, Tutuga Africa and Undivided Roots.

Saturday’s line-up includes fun-filled activities for the entire family, toddlers included. While the marathon entrants finalise their registration, kiddies can enjoy a series of “Marafun” races that include a 21-metre “Nappy Crawl” and a 420-metre “Juvenile Jog”.

On to Sunday, when the serious athletes tie up the laces on their running shoes, three races are scheduled to take place — the full 42 km marathon, the half marathon and the 10 km race.

The venue for the event along with the start line for the race this year is at the Natal Carbineers Drill Hall on Geere Street and the main race on Sunday begins at 4 am.

This year’s race is set to be even bigger than the last, with over 165 000 water sachets, 20 000 energy sachets and over a ton of ice to keep it all cool.

Some of the big names taking part in Sunday’s race are Steven Muzingi (three-time Comrades champ), Collen Makaza (current world 50 km champ) and Olympian Tanith Maxwell.

Race director John Hall said he is very excited for the event.

“It’s been described to us as one of the flagship marathons in the province and we are just holding up that name,” Hall said. “This is more than just a race where you just register, run and collect your medal. It’s going to leave a legacy.”
