Exco to go paperless as councillors given laptops

2012-09-07 00:00

MSUNDUZI Municipality executive committee (Exco) has opted to stop shuffling paper and use laptops instead.

An Exco meeting agreed yesterday to a recommendation to buy laptops for Exco members to use during council meetings in order to save paper.

The recommendation states that the initiative shows the Msunduzi Municipality is serious about the environment.

All documents tabled in Exco meetings are printed, using hundreds of reams of paper.

The council said the process required the attention of the printing department and the use of expensive printing technology.

Laptops would cost the municipality R80 000 once-off for all 10 councillors.

The recommendation states that 66 762 A4 pages are produced on average at each Exco meeting. This amounts to eight pine trees, it adds, and using laptops will save 352 trees over a year.

Each Exco councillor will have a laptop and a 3G card that will access the Msunduzi virtual private network, which means that councillors will be able to work as if they are sitting in an office of the municipality and are connected to the network. The recommendations states that the user can be anywhere in the world and still be able to work and gain access to the system, while being governed by Msunduzi policies.
