Existing jobs safe, say NPA

2008-11-11 00:00

Recent media reports that hundreds of prosecutors could find themselves out of a job were dismissed by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) yesterday as “inaccurate and mischievous”.

NPA spokesman Tlali Tlali said in a statement the NPA could only surmise that the distortion of facts arises from a misunderstanding of the contents of the NPA chief financial officer’s official report at a recent meeting of directors of public prosecutions.

“The official report contained details of a projected over-expenditure on this financial year’s personnel budget, if all vacant positions were to be filled.

“A decision was therefore made that only critical vacancies would be advertised and filled this year. In this process, all vacant positions not identified as critical would be considered to be unfunded and therefore there will be no attempt to fill them within this year.

“This situation will be reconsidered in the new financial year … and the establishment will be re-adjusted accordingly,” Tlali said.
