Extreme sport: FeverX games this weekend

2010-12-17 00:00

THE extreme stunt shows continue at the FeverX headquarters (Margate Sports School) this weekend. The demonstrations include FMX stunts by top SA FMX rider Shaun Blaauw, BMX bikers, skateboarders tackling the half-pipe, karate and aerobics displays, and a whole lot more. Alongside the FMX and BMX demonstrations will be a host of market stalls as well as a food tent to keep you powered and running throughout the day.

today:

Put together by the Gladiators Rugby Academy, the Ignite Touch Rugby tournament takes place at the FeverX headquarters today. There will be prize money and medals for the teams that reach the finals.

At 5 pm today the Vidi Frag LAN Gaming experience will start and not stop until Sunday morning. For those of us who are slightly technologically challenged, LAN Gaming allows multiplayer games to take place over many individual computers and is really 10 times better that “playing against the computer”. R150 gets you in and activated for over 35 hours of gaming — contact Helenka van Wyk at helenkavw@vidicom.dnsalias.net to secure a spot.

Mixed Martial Art (MMA) has become the most viewed combat, sport surpassing WWE Wrestling, the NFL and baseball. The MMA Extreme Fight Night takes place in the big tent tonight. Tickets are R100 and will get you a seat for the hottest action — 12 full contact fights featuring some of KZN’s top kick boxers and extreme MMA fighters.

tomorrow:

Bringing the South African surfing calendar to a close is the FeverX Surf Contest taking place at St Mike’s Beach. Southern KZN Surfing presents a 2A-rated men’s and a 1A-rated women’s Pro Surf Tour (PST) Contest. The event promises to attract a strong entry from across SA, who will be aiming to score PST rating points.

Alongside the Headquarters Arena events are two others tomorrow that should not be missed.

Firstly, watch as Extreme Skydivers drop from above, literally, to show off their skills way over our heads. Secondly, see how far you can pull a car or flip a (large!) tyre in the Strongman competition organised by the energetic team from the Genesis Gym.

Also tomorrow evening the Catlike Thieves will open for headlining band Prime Circle in the main tent for R50 a ticket. Prime Circle are described as SA’s number one rock band and they will perform old favourites as well as a selection from their new album Jekyll & Hyde.

On Sunday:

Sunday sees the South Coast FeverX Games coming to a close, but it’s going to be done properly, in extreme style. The Pro Surf Tour Men’s and Women’s Contests will finish up on Sunday, so make sure you catch the last bit of wave action if you are not going to be involved in the land action that follows.

Last, but certainly not least, is the FeverX Mountain Bike Classic which should entice those who know what it means to have had a banana scraper, beartrap or rhoid buffing — if not then there is always a first time and why not now? Offering a 25 km and 45 km classic as well as a 12 km fun ride, the event is expected to draw the most number of entries in the South Coast FeverX Games. The track will certainly test your limits so we cannot guarantee a comfy ride home, but that is what extreme sport is all about.
