Ezemvelo furniture burnt for braai

2010-06-25 00:00

THE Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife team at the Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve near Port Shepstone is trying to track down a group of their visitors who apparently thought the heavy wooden deck furniture would work fine as firewood for a braai.

In a statement yesterday, Ezemvelo’s media manager, Jeff Gaisford, said the wooden deck furniture was provided as part of an upgrade of the facilities.

After two of the heavy wooden deck chairs at their rustic cottage had disappeared, a thorough search of the area was made.

This failed to produce any sign of the missing furniture. But a short while later, a member of the cleaning staff discovered metal fittings from the chairs in the ashes while cleaning the braai stand.

KZN Wildlife has expressed great disappointment over the incident.

Gaisford said that besides the risk of prosecution for damage to property, there are also health hazards in using such deck furniture as firewood.

“Most wooden furniture used in Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife coastal resorts has been treated with an insecticide and preservative which is toxic if smoke from burning this wood is inhaled.

“There are other potential health hazards should any foodstuffs, such as meat, be contaminated by the fumes given off by the burning wood,” Gaisford added.
