Ezinqoleni: Mother of six says municipality refused housing assistance

2011-11-23 00:00

A SINGLE mother and her six children from Ezinqoleni who have been living at a local church for the past two years, alleges that she has been refused assistance for housing by the municipality.

Zinhle Cele (44) said that she and her children live in a church because they cannot afford rent.

“My father gave me a site to build my house, but I could not afford to start building it because I am poor. I went to the municipality because they are building houses for the people, but they turned me down three times,” she said.

Cele said she was not even registered on a waiting list for a house.

“They just told me they can’t build me a house, but other people who already have a house get one free one.”

Municipality spokesperson Thulani Sitole said they have an Insitu Housing Project in rural areas which is similar to the RDP Housing project.

“One of the requirements to be a beneficiary of this housing subsidy is that the beneficiary must have an existing household when they apply.”

He said that in rural areas many people live with extended families in one homestead.

“If there are two families in the homestead and they both apply for a house, we will build one on the same site. One gets the new house and one will stay in the old house”.

Sithole added that in the case of Cele, she did not meet the requirements to be registered because an existing plot is not considered.

“We will, however, conduct our own investigations on this matter and make informed decisions after our findings,” he said.
