FC AK case likely to be appealed next week

GAUTENG soccer team FC AK have still not lodged an appeal against the decision by the Premier Soccer League disciplinary committee to expel the club from the National First Division and into the Vodacom League, and ban owner Azziz Kara for bribery.

The NFD final play-off for promotion to the PSL, which was to have been contested by Inland Stream winners AK and Coastal victors Maritzburg United, remains in limbo until the matter is resolved.

By the end of yesterday’s 72-hour deadline for the case to go to arbitration, there had been no sign of an application from FC AK, who were also fined R500 000.

However, AK still have four more working days, until the end of Tuesday next week, to lodge an appeal with the Safa Appeals Board.

“The deadline has passed and the matter will not go to arbitration,” said PSL media manager Altaaf Kazi.

“It seems likely that it will go to appeal.”

Indications from FC AK are that the club will contest the verdict and sentence, with the Sunday Sun reporting that Kara will rope in a “powerful legal team” for the appeal.

Kara has also made TV appearances claiming conspiracy against him, and protesting that the evidence in the case came from only one source, Mpumalanga Black Aces goalkeeper Michael Babale.

Kara, who received a 30-year ban from soccer, is alleged to have approached Babale with an offer for the “keeper to throw Aces” December 23 Inland Stream game against FC AK.

Amongst the evidence, a bank deposit slip reportedly records a R10 000 deposit into Babale’s bank account by Stranger Oliphant, an FC AK employee.

Kara faces a possible investigation by the SAPS over the matter.
