Fabulous voices add up to the freshest in a capella

Review: D-Seven

AS their title suggests, what is so captivating about these seven young men is the freshness of their performance. Their informal, relaxed, and yet oh-so-well-rehearsed presence on stage won the audience over in minutes, and left them with a standing ovation when it was over.

In perfect harmony, with brilliant arrangements, the boys sang a range of music from jazz standards to hip- hop, and from Coldplay to Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

Each member of the group had his moment to shine, introduced with some clever patter by the leader of the group, Patrick Craig.

Each song sounded as if it had a full band behind it, so good was their backing for each soloist.

Practically every instrument of an orchestra was imitated and used to beautiful effect. But they are at their ultimate best when they drop the tricksy rhythmic backing, and sing in close choral harmony without amplification — this is goosebump territory!

A group not to be missed if ever they come back this way, and a brilliant start to a top-class festival.
