Family: Satisfied, but still sad

2008-06-09 00:00

BOB Downs’s daughter, Jennifer Harrison, and his son, Wally Downs, were among the family members at court. Downs’s other daughter, Denise Hawkins, lives overseas.

Wally Downs said he was satisfied that justice was done, but added that it is “frightening” that “no lessons are learned” and that crime still continues.

Harrison, who fought back tears, said as a Christian, she knows God is the ultimate judge.

She said she felt bad that Dlamini attacked her father, an “amazing man” who would happily have given him whatever possessions he had.

Downs’s grand-daughter, Jane Downs, said that what did not emerge in court was that Dlamini stole items of her grandfather’s clothing, including a special pair of shoes, which led to his arrest. “When he was arrested, he was wearing my grandfather’s shoes.”

According to an article published in The Witness by Downs’s grand-daughter, Colleen Downs, Downs was a “builder, woodworker and blacksmith”.

He was murdered in his home at 111 Russell Street, which he built and had lived in for 72 years, seven of these alone following the death of his wife, Penny.

Family members told The Witness that Downs had been attacked once before, and publicly forgave his attackers.
