Family escape blazing home: arson feared

2011-05-26 00:00

A PIETERMARITZBURG woman faces the daunting challenge of rebuilding her house after it burned down, allegedly after it was set alight by two strangers during the early hours of Saturday morning.

Nardine Sharpley of Glenwood said, “We were asleep with my sons, Brimel and Marvin, and their friend when we were awoken by a loud noise made by two boys from the neighbourhood alerting us that we must get out of the house because it was on fire.”

As they fled Marvin (22) was burnt in the face.

Sharpley, who works as a binder at the Kendall and Strachan printing works, said she cannot afford to rent another house and doesn’t know how she will pay for the repairs.

She doesn’t know why anyone would target her.

The boys who alerted her about the fire told her that they saw two unknown men walking towards the main road after midnight and then immediately saw flames coming from the house.

“Without their help we would not have lived to tell the tale.

We were fortunate that the gas cylinder did not catch fire because we would have died,” Sharpley added.

She thanked the fire brigade for responding quickly, and her neighbours who have supported her.

Sharpley said she will continue living in the house even though it does not have windows or a front door.

She said she has not been able to open a case.

Fire inspector Richard Dlamini said the case is a criminal matter because the owner suspects arson.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan said no case had been opened in connection with the incident.
