Family in shock and disbelief

2013-04-21 00:00

SHOCK and disbelief. That was the reaction of family members of the two Boston bombing suspects, Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

According to various news reports, their father, Anzor, who returned to Russia last year after working as a mechanic in the U.S., could not believe the charges.

“They never could have done this. Never, ever, ever!”, he told People magazine. “I feel terrible! Why they kill my son? Something wrong! My sons never do bombing. They hated guns — how they do bombs?

“I talked to my sons yesterday, both of them. We talked about the bombing. I was worried about them, they said they were okay.

“My sons hate people who do bombs, they hate terrorists.”

His sons were “never interested in politics” — they had “big dreams” to go into business.

In an interview with the Associated Press earlier, he called Dzhokar a “true angel”.

However, Ruslan Tsarni, an uncle who lives in Maryland, called Tamerlan a “loser” and said he deserved to die.

He described Dzhokhar as “quiet”, but said he had not seen his nephews since December 2005. He had last spoken to them three months ago.

“It is atrocity. It’s a shame — they’re the children of my brother … Me myself and my family had nothing to do with them for a long, long time,” other media reported him as saying.

“They put a shame on our entire family. On the entire Chechen ethnicity. Anything else to do with Islam or religion is a fraud, a fake. Somebody radicalised them.”

Another uncle, Alvi Tsarni, who lives in Boston. was visibly upset.

“I don’t believe any of my nephews are involved in this horrible incident,” he told local television station WBZ. “If he did this I’m sorry too. It’s crazy, it’s not possible. I can’t believe it. Who can do this stuff?’

The New Jersey Star Ledger spoke to a woman who did not disclose her name but identified herself as the two boys’ sister who lives in West New York.

“They were great people. I never would have expected it. They are smart — I don’t know what’s gotten into them,” she told the newspaper.

Asked if she was okay, she said: “No I’m not okay — no one is okay right now. I’m hurt for everyone who has been hurt.”

The Mail Online reported yesterday that the brothers’ aunt Maret is a surgeon who lives in Canada. She is from Chechnya and her acts as a battlefield surgeon are described in a book. “I know these two nephews — smart boys, good boys — they have no motive for that. They have no ideas to be going to this kind of act. It’s just not the case, it cannot be true,” she told Canadian TV.

It also reported that their mother was arrested last year for allegedly stealing $1 600 worth of clothes from a department store. She is now back in Russia with her husband.

Zubeidat Tsarnaeva (45) told Russia Today’s English language TV news channel that her sons were innocent. “This is a set up. My sons would never do such a thing, Tamerlan never told me he would be on the side of Jihad.”
