Family of five attacked by duo wearing balaclavas

2012-01-03 00:00

TWO men wearing balaclavas attacked a family of five while they were watching television in their home in Port Shepstone on Thursday night.

The men entered the front of the house through an open door and threatened the family with firearms.

The perpetrators tied the family up using their shoelaces and clothing and demanded cash and firearms from the home owner.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said the robbers assaulted the complainant and his teenage son.

“They [punched them] and hit them with the guns,” said Wiid.

The men then forced the owner of the house upstairs and made him open the safe before locking the family inside a room and fleeing with a cellphone, laptop, cash and a 9 mm star pistol. They used the owner’s vehicle to get away.

“The stolen car was later found abandoned in Shelly Beach,” she said.

A house robbery case is being investigated. Wiid urged the community to lock doors and security gates and be extra vigilant.

“Draw your curtains at sunset and make sure every window is shut tight before going to bed. Don’t think that it will not happen to you,” she said.
