DURBAN has once again proven why it is South Africa’s playground when it registered the highest number of soccer fans attending the 16 official Fifa Fan Fest venues to view the World Cup soccer matches.

This was observed from the opening match between Bafana Bafana and Mexico.

In a statement released on Fifa Media Channel website yesterday, more than one million spectators attended the Fifa Fan Fest in the first six days of the World Cup.

According to the statement, the best attended venues were mostly the sunny Durban with 200 000 spectators for the South African Fifa Fan Fest and Paris in France with more than 100 000 fans for the International Fifa Fan Fest.

“The highest numbers of spectators so far have been reached on the opening match day on 11 June with more than 400 000 fans accross all venues. On that day, the best visited site in South Africa was Johannesburg with more than 70 000 and Mexico City with more than 50 000.”

The channel said that many venues in SA reached their maximum capacities when the South African team played against Uruguay.

The International Fifa Fan Fests are organized at six iconic locations around the world:

Berlin — Olympic Square

Rome — Piazza di Siena, in Vila Borghese

Paris — Les Jardins du Trocadéro

Rio de Janeiro — Copacabana beach

Mexico City — Zocalo

Sydney — Darling Harbour
