Fans can share Sharks’ cup glory

2013-10-30 00:00

THE victorious Sharks will celebrate their Currie Cup triumph over Western Province with a parade through Durban today.

Starting from King’s Park at 9 am, the Sharks will make their way to the city hall on board a rickshaw bus. They will then be treated to a short VIP breakfast where they will meet and greet the city’s mayor, James Nxumalo.

Captain Keegan Daniel, CEO John Smit and the mayor are expected to give short speeches outside the city hall.

The squad — and the Currie Cup trophy — will then hop back onto the bus to resume the parade.

The procession will move along Anton Lembede (Smith) Street and into West Street before making its way along the beachfront on O.R. Tambo Drive (Marine Parade).

After turning left up Argyle Road past the Blue Waters Hotel, the parade will then make its way back to King’s Park where it is expected to arrive at around 1 pm.

While the decision to host the parade today was only passed at council’s Executive Committee meeting yesterday, eThekwini’s municipal spokesperson Thabo Mofokeng said he had no doubt that people would show up in their numbers to show their appreciation to the Sharks.

“We have hosted parades before, and we are sure that there is enough time for people to hear about it,” Mofokeng told The Witness yesterday.

“We are utilising various media outlets, including social media and radio, to get the word out.”

Mofokeng added that the city centre would be abuzz with activity regardless of the parade.

This would draw significant attention to the Sharks and their achievement.
