Fans in the midlands devastated by defeat

2010-07-09 00:00

GERMAN football fans from around the midlands are still hurting after a 1-0 semi-final defeat at the hands of Spain on Wednesday sent their side crashing out of the World Cup.

The Reverend Rene Risch of the Wartburg Lutheran Church and the German supporters who attended the Stammtisch — a traditional get-together in a pub or bar — that he had organised for the match were devastated when Spain scored.

“We were all bitterly disappointed; we really believed Germany was going to win the World Cup,” said Risch.

“Germany is still the team of the tournament in my eyes, though. If you look at how they had been written off when the tournament began and how far they got, they have done exceptionally well.”

Risch admitted that he could not sleep after he saw his side eliminated from the World Cup, but said that he sees a bright future for the team.

“I think the side is very young and it is one to watch out for in the future,” he said.

“I will be attending the Durban fan park for the third/fourth place play-off match on Saturday.

“We all still want the team to finish third and our support for our boys will not waver.”
