Fares protest: 34 arrested in Umbumbulu

2012-06-05 00:00

PROTESTERS barricaded the R603 at Umbumbulu with burning tyres and trees yesterday to protest a R2,50 rise in taxi fees between the town and Isipingo.

Police said they had arrested 34 people who will appear in the Umbumbulu Magistrate’s Court today.

The area is stable and is being monitored by the public order police members.

“There were no other areas affected by this strike,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Vincent Mdunge.

One of the protesters told The Witness in a phone call that he was one of 62 people incarcerated.

“Some of us we were not part of the protest,” he said.

“We were sitting on the side of the road when we were arrested.”

The man, who did not wish to be named, voiced his support for the protest.

“We cannot pay R12,50 for a taxi fare to Isipingo, from R10. This is too much for us,” he said.

He claimed that police wanted them to pay R500 bail to be released.
