2013-06-04 00:00

THE last remaining member of the Natal team that won the South African Coloured Soccer Tournament in 1954, Elijah Ali Nagel, died on May 30.

Nagel (79) was diagnosed with prostate cancer in January, but probably had it for around two years. He died as a result of the cancer.

Nicknamed “cheetah”, Nagel was one of the fastest members of the South African and Natal Coloured Soccer teams in the fifties. He was also the youngest member of the Natal Coloured Soccer team.

He spent most of his soccer days practising with his team, the Railway Soccer Club, that was founded by the Dutlow family and other community members. His great skills on the field contributed to the strength of the provincial team.

When Nagel retired from football he become a motor mechanic and settled down in Eastwood, Pietermaritzburg. He has six children.
