Farm sitter (65) stabbed to death

A 65-YEAR-OLD Greytown man looking after a farm for a friend was attacked, stabbed and killed inside the house at the weekend.

Dave Maratos was apparently farm-sitting for a friend at Brydom Farm along Mispah Road in Greytown on Saturday morning when he was attacked by unknown men who stabbed him several times. He died at the scene.

The owner of the farm declined to speak to the press yesterday and the victim’s son said he could not speak as the attack was very tragic and still very fresh.

Dave Carroll, who runs a private security call centre in Greytown, said they were not sure about what had happened.

“He was a farm sitter and had been for the past 10 years. When the farmer is away, he would be called in to look after the farm for whatever period the farmer was gone. Right now we do not know what the motive of this attack was. It was the first time that Maratos had been farm-sitting on that particular farm,” said Carroll.

“We understand the attack happened sometime between Friday evening and early Saturday morning. We learned about it around 8 am on Saturday and we informed the authorities and all the necessary people,” he said.

The police said Maratos was asleep in one of the bedrooms in the farm house when at some point during the night on Friday, he was awakened by a noise in the kitchen.

He went to investigate and was confronted by unknown men, who produced knives and stabbed him multiple times in his upper body.

It is believed that the men gained entry by forcing open a gate and got in through an unlocked front door. They allegedly stole a DVD player and three cellphones.

Police appealed to anyone who can assist with any information regarding the incident to contact the investigating officer, Detective Warrant Officer Phuzamanzi Mbambo, at 033 413 9034 or on his cell at 076 606 8697.
