A 63-YEAR-OLD farmer was left bleeding from the head near a dam he was fishing in as his attackers made off with his vehicle, after assaulting him on Wednesday afternoon.

Simon van der Merwe was fishing at Goswell Farm dam in Cato Ridge when he was attacked at about 4 pm.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan said the criminals hit Van der Merwe on the head with an iron bar from his boat.

She said the criminals left with the victim’s silver Mazda 323 leaving him bleeding. His 9 mm pistol and three fishing reels, which were in the vehicle, were also stolen.

Jeevan said Van der Merwe went to his house to call the police.

“A short while later whilst patrolling the surrounding areas, police spotted the motor vehicle and immediately gave chase along Georgedale Road towards Hammarsdale. The suspects then stopped the vehicle and all three suspects got out and fled into the nearby bushes.”

She said the suspects escaped.

Anyone with information regarding the incident can contact investigating Constable Elvis Ntshangase on 031 785 9025 or 073 927 3181, or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
