Farms: Kwanalu rates action adjourned

2010-12-06 00:00

A HIGH court action by the KwaZulu-Natal Agricultural Union (Kwanalu), which is seeking relief for the agricultural sector to have a maximum rate on which agricultural properties may be rated, has been adjourned to April 15 next year.

The case came before Acting Judge Thandi Norman in the high court in Pietermaritzburg on Friday, but no argument on the merits of the application took place.

Kwanalu said in a statement last week that there is an overwhelming amount of expert evidence to suggest that a rate randage on agricultural properties — before taking into account any phasing in provisions, rebates or discounts, above half a percent (0,5%) — will render the agricultural economy in the province unsustainable and will have severe consequences for the agricultural economy in the province.
