Fashion makes an impact at Dundee July

HORSE racing fans and socialites came out in their numbers for the eighth Dundee July horseracing event on Saturday.

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation, Ntombikayise Sibhidla-Saphetha, announced that there were plans to make the race a national event as it has attracted spectators and participants from other provinces.

“This is one of the events that pulls people from other provinces … Even our neighbouring country Lesotho is participating in this historic event,” said Sibhidla-Saphetha.

TV personalities and Ukhozi FM radio presenters were among the audience at the dusty racetrack. The focus was not only on the races, but also on fashion and flashy cars like Maseratis and Audi R8s.

Handing a trophy to the race winner, chairperson of Gold Circle Bill Lambert said it will continue sponsoring the race.

A local horse, Skhwamasemali from Camperdown, won race two, earning its owners R18 000 after beating horses from Lesotho, Mpumalanga, Eastern Cape, Botswana and Free State.

Owner Mbuyiselwa Mkhize said this was his first win at the Dundee July.

“We started training with Skhwamasemali from last year. I love horse racing as I grew up in a family that had horses,” said Mkhize.

The only female rider, Nora Nkambule (22) from Mpumalanga, told The Witness that she has had to overcome laughter of her peers.

Local business was also boosted by the event. Hlengiwe Gwebu of Z Lounge said she attended to promote her fashion business.

Street vendor Nomahlubi Hlubi was happy that business was good on the race day.

“Life is very difficult for us in this small town.

“We need to make sure that opportunities like this don’t miss us. Today, I tripled my takings by selling more chips, sweets, vetkoek and fish,” said Hlubi.
