Fatal shooting: Hospital employee held

2013-05-31 00:00

A SUSPECT in the murder of a hospital official who was gunned down at work has been arrested after three months.

The KwaZulu-Natal provincial tracking team and Umbilo detectives traced the 43-year-old man to a flat in Hillbrow, where he was allegedly hiding, said police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane.

The man was taken into custody on Wednesday night.

On February 28, Sipho Mfayela (54) was shot twice in his office at King Edward VIII Hospital in Durban and died.

The man behind the killing is alleged to be an employee who was the subject of a disciplinary hearing. Zwane said Mfayela had just announced the outcome of the hearing to the worker when he was shot in the chest.

He said the alleged shooter drove away. A warrant for his arrest was issued.

The suspect is scheduled to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
