Fears of rerial rapist on S. Coast

2010-10-22 00:00

A WOMAN was brutally raped in uMtentweni on Wednesday night while walking home from a local supermarket.

The attack, which occurred around 7.30 pm, has led police to believe that the attacker could be a serial rapist.

A resident who was questioned by police and who asked to remain anonymous, told The Witness that police officers have described the rape as “one of the worst seen on the South Coast”.

The 35-year-old victim was bitten on the arm during the attack.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Vivian Shabane said the victim was overtaken by a man while walking along Link Road in uMtentweni.

The man then allegedly hid in nearby bushes, lying in wait for the woman to pass.

Drawing a knife on the woman, the attacker dragged her into the bushes and raped her.

The injured woman walked back to the supermarket where she works and informed security guards of what had happened to her.

The police were immediately contacted.

The woman is recovering in Port Shepstone hospital.

A police report stated that the victim has bruises on her jaw, possibly from the knife, according to Shabane.

uMtentweni resident Thys Bekker said he heard two screams at around 8 oçlock on Wednesday evening.

He walked to his fence to investigate, he said, but could see nothing.

Police revealed yesterday morning that the rape took place directly across the road from Bekker’s house.

A case has been opened, but no arrests have yet been made.
