Feast of club rugby this weekend

2008-06-05 00:00

THERE is a bumper crop of club rugby in KZN today and the capital city is not left out of the mix.

In the pick of the Pietermaritzburg fixtures, Premier Division side Maritzburg Varsity meet Crusaders from Durban North at 8 pm on groundskeeper Dave Evans’s immaculate Varsity Stadium pitch at Peter Booysen Sports Park off Golf Road.

Another plum fixture tonight sees PMB Collegians up against the South Coast Warriors on groundsman Fanie Crous’s fine Woodburn Stadium field, also scheduled for 8 pm.

Both PMB sides came off second-best in the corresponding away fixtures and it will be interesting to see whether they can bring the score margins closer together on their home turf.

For Varsity tonight’s task is a Herculean one, as Crusaders are one of the top teams in the Premier Division and the campus-based side remain anchored at the bottom of the log without a win this season.

What has also been particularly evident this season is that, in patches, Varsity are capable of playing the quality of rugby that can at least match the majority of their opponents in this division.

However, the perennial problem for the men in green and white over recent years, and particularly in 2008, has been to put it all together for 80 minutes.

Another intriguing clash on the cards is the U20A clash between Midlands and Crusaders at 6.30 pm on Woodburn 2.

Midlands kicked themselves for giving away too many points in attack and defence during the first-round defeat at Durban North and are determined to turn the tables at home.
