Ferguson first woman to conquer Umhlanga to DBN

2014-07-07 00:00

SARAH Ferguson (32) finished a mammoth 18-kilometre swim from Umhlanga to Durban on Saturday morning, the first woman to do so.

The swim was a stepping stone for a 40-kilometre channel crossing from the islands of Hawaii to Maui for charity, in two to three years’ time.

The Durban North physiotherapist, coach and business owner was interviewed yesterday telephonically from where she was “resting on the couch”. She said the swim went well, apart from choppy seas in the last three to four kilometres that made swimming difficult.

“My helper John McCarthy talked me through it. Another swimmer, Mark Taylor, also helped by joining me in the water for the last kilometre.”

She said her helper had also guided her through the water away from blue bottles and a big jellyfish.

Ferguson, an accomplished open water swimmer who also represented South Africa in competitive swimming, said she would probably attempt another long-distance swim in Durban in about a year in preparation for the Hawaii swim.

She swims for the “I am Water” and “Deep and Beyond” charities, both of which help disabled and disadvantaged people to explore nature through adventure and create awareness for ocean conservation.
