Festivals: Mixed fortunes for Northwood in Vryheid

2013-04-09 00:00

TWO other school rugby festivals took place over the Easter holidays, the Nashua Vryheid Festival — one of the oldest in the country — and the Independent Schools U15 festival held at Hilton.

The Vryhed festival featured a number of middle-tier schools, two Zimbabwe schools, third-tier schools and sides from Waterkloof, Affies and Westville, which were essentially mixtures of second and third XV players not selected for the squads at the festivals where their first XVs were playing.

Fixtures are only announced for the first day; in the next two rounds the fixtures are arranged on strength, a wise move given that there are schools of different abilities.

On the last day, the last two matches involve four sides that the organisers consider to be the biggest crowd-pullers, due to their results and the brand of rugby played.

Northwood had a tough first-round match against Sarel Cilliers followed by an equally tough game against the Afrikaans Hoër Kroonstad, which they won 19-14 and 20-10 respectively. On the last day they played in the final game against Pionier, the top Northern KZN school, losing 10-17.

The Westville XV played in the penultimate match against hosts Vryheid, winning by two tries to one, 14-7.

The U15 Festival at Hilton had 17 independent school teams playing, with one unfortunately withdrawing.

It was then decided to play two 25-minute games on each of the three days of the Festival.

Kearsney and St Charles were the only two schools to win all six of their matches.
