Festive lights: out goes santa, in come butterflies

2010-12-04 00:00

ETHEKWINI residents and holiday visitors will experience a different kind of festive season lighting display this year.

The lights in Pixley KaSeme (West) Street, always a much-loved feature of the city’s holiday decor, this year feature a “children’s theme” of flowers and butterflies, rather than traditional images of Christmas, so no Santa Claus, angels, reindeers or nativity scenes.

Allegations that the municipality is attempting to steer away from depicting images with religious connotations have been doing the rounds, but this was denied by one of the municipality’s managers in a recent news report.

Last year, the municipality cancelled its annual Christmas display at Gugu Dlamini Park.

At the time, infrastructure upgrades that were necessary for the Football World Cup as well as budget constraints were cited as the reasons behind the cancellation.

It was not clear at the time of going to print whether the display would resume this year, but past displays depict the nativity scene and a multi-coloured fantasy land.

The eThekwini Municipality failed to respond to questions by the time of going to print.
