Fiery crash: six pupils and taxi driver killed in head-on collision

2011-09-24 00:00

SIX pupils from three high schools in the Tzaneen area, Limpopo, and a taxi driver were killed in the early hours of yesterday in a head-on collision between a car and a minibus.

Some of the pupils were in the minibus, returning from a matric party at the town’s showgrounds. In the car were two matric girls, also returning from a party.

The car driver, 18-year-old Toinette Smith, was killed. Her friend, Celeste van Staden (18), was critically injured.

The taxi caught fire and the driver and five passengers were burnt beyond recognition.

Two other teenagers managed to escape from the burning wreck and are very seriously injured, police spokesperson Captain Simon Shikwambana said.

Magnus Steyn, head of Hoërskool Merensky, which Smith and Van Staden attended, said the party was not the school’s matric dance, but a private function.

The accident came a day after one in which five pre-school children and a parent were killed when a bus taking them on an outing crashed, also in Limpopo, in the early hours of Thursday,

Limpompo Transport Department spokesperson Thesan Moodley said 23 people have died in three accidents since Thursday.
